Patch digitizing

A patch has to survive being cut out and sewn onto something else, so the border does the structural work. It has to be built for that.

The border carries the patch

On a patch the outer satin is not decoration, it is the edge that stops the backing fraying once it is cut. We run it wide, usually 2.5 to 3mm, give it a zig-zag or double-run underlay so it sits proud, and close the corners properly so there is no gap where the scissors are going through.

Full coverage against a twill base

If the whole patch is stitched, the fill has to be planned as one surface: consistent angle changes, no visible seams between blocks, and enough underlay that the backing does not show between rows. If you are working on a coloured twill or felt base, we leave the base showing where it should and only fill what needs filling, which cuts the stitch count a long way. Tell us which you are doing, it changes the file completely.

Shapes and merrowing

For merrowed-edge patches we size the design to the finished patch with the merrow allowance left clear, so the overlock does not eat your outline. For laser-cut or hot-cut edges we build the border to sit right at the cut line instead.
